Sunday Discipleship Hour Forum - Advent 2020: An Exploration of Spirituality and Prayer

Sundays, November 29, December 6, December 13, 2020 | 10:45 am | via Zoom

Presenter: Pastor Cara Tanis,
Pastor and Mission Developer at Emmaus Table/7400 Woodlawn in Seattle

Each of the three sessions is designed to stand alone so you may attend any or all three.
New material will be shared each week.
In each session, we will explore classic models of prayer and spirituality as well as history and themes of Advent. You will also be invited to experience spiritual disciplines (some familiar and some perhaps new).
No previous experience is necessary. Everyone will be challenged to open oneself to a spirit of emerging growth.

November 29 – The traditional Advent duality of Light and Dark is a rich theme for this beloved season, but leaving light and dark language unexplored is problematic. We will approach the liturgical roots of Advent as an intense time of repentance which is central to any healthy spirituality. Discipleship demands our whole and honest selves, therefore our embodied experience will be an introduction to “praying in color.”
Please bring paper and some colored pencils, markers, or crayons.

December 6 – Be prepared to brainstorm the countless ways that humans pray and how you are nourished in spirit through prayer and other spiritual disciplines. Expect to try a new practice when you leave this class. In addition, we will seek to both celebrate and enrich our North American Protestant Advent Traditions. What do you like most about Advent? What has our church embraced? And what have we neglected or never experienced?

December 13 – Holy Anticipation, Blessed Incarnation, and Intentional Liberation. In week 1, I will plant the seed that there will be some significant silence in week 3. Meeting ourselves, our neighbors, and the Divine in silence, movement and the re-wilding of God’s Beloved Kindom (Yes! KIN…DOM)

Your host and learning companion is Cara Tanis (pastor, spiritual director, coach). Cara is currently serving as pastor and mission developer at Emmaus Table/7400 Woodlawn in the Green Lake area of Seattle. She is eager to be journeying with you this Advent.

Sign up no later than the Saturday before the Forum so we can get the Zoom link emailed to you in time.
