Congregation Liaison: Outreach and Servant Ministries Committee

Eastside Baby Corner (EBC) was founded in 1990 because Karen Ridlon, a local pediatric nurse practitioner, became concerned about the large numbers of babies in her practice that began life without adequate food, clothing, beds or safety equipment. Her commitment to giving these children a stronger start grew from a idea and a few items gathered in her dining room, into an agency that in 2016 filled its 500,000th order of absolute essentials.

For 50 weeks each year, volunteers and staff at Eastside Baby Corner collect community donations, purchase and distribute children’s and maternity items to families in collaboration with organizations helping families in our area. Case managers from partner agencies assess the needs of the family, request the items from EBC, pick up and deliver them to the family. Serving a broad area across King County that extends to the Cascade foothills and from south of Renton into south Snohomish County, EBC serves as a diaper bank, a clothing bank, and a food source for more than 800 kids each week. EBC practices good stewardship of resources through smart purchasing in bulk, reliance on volunteers and in-kind donations. EBC is the major source of baby food, formula, diapers, cribs and car seats for eleven local food banks. In total, EBC works with over 50 area agencies to assist people in need.

Saint Andrew’s supports Eastside Baby Corner with budgeted funds, volunteer events, and though gifts at Christmas (Love Tree).

Monetary donations are always welcome. Make check payable to “Saint Andrew’s” and note “EBC” in the memo line.

Diaper Derby ~ May 1 – June 5, 2021

Saint Andrew’s Lutheran is supporting families in need of diapers and wipes by taking part in the Eastside Baby Corner’s (EBC) 7th Annual Diaper Derby. The Diaper Derby is a competitive fun race to collect diapers and wipes for babies living in poverty or crisis. Join Eastside Baby Corner in helping children and their families provide for their basic needs.

The online event is May 1 to June 5, where organizations and businesses entered in the event compete each week by purchasing diapers and wipes online from the EBC website. Each competing organization has a horse representing them in a division race. Points are attached to diapers and wipes purchased from an organization to the horse that represents them.

Saint Andrew’s horse’s name is Amazing Andrew and we are completing in the Kentucky Derby division.

Each package of diapers or wipes purchased online at the EBC Giving Catalog goes directly to EBC and is given a point value.
Families need all sizes of disposable diapers but the most needed are sizes 4, 5, and 6 and Pull-Ups or GoodNites.
Diapers wipes are needed and will be counted toward points also.
Cash donations count as points with one point for every $10.00 donated, up to $500.00 per week. Since donations are online, cash donations would be by credit card.

When donating, be sure to enter our church’s name or our horse’s name – Amazing Andrew – for EBC to keep track of our points and our placement in the race.

To donate diapers and wipes for direct delivery to EBC, order online at
To donate monies, go online to website:
All cash and online donations must be received by 2:00 pm on Thursdays during the competition to count toward our week’s points.

In 2020, Saint Andrew’s placed 2nd in the Kentucky Derby. Last year’s Derby brought in over 85,000 diapers and 75,000 baby wipes for children and families struggling with diaper need in our community.

Again in 2021, come help support families to meet their basic needs!
