Prayer

O God, in your divine mystery you embrace difference in unity, and you call your people to live in peace with all. We pray for an end to racial and ethnic prejudice. Free us from the dread of difference. Free our society from centuries of violence against the other. Call us to repentance for our sins of racism and prejudice, known and unknown. Transform discrimination into a passion for justice. Guide us to nurture a society that embodies reconciliation and cooperation among all, for the sake of the one who embodies your love, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

News to Share

Sunday Church School (SCS) In the September 2024 issue of the VOICE, we shared that Ann Ross-Clarke and Alex Lynn are not able to teach SCS this year. Ann Thorpe, Doug Johnson, and Pastor Lara have all been working to identify potential teachers and we are coming up empty. We currently have a one-room school model and, ideally, we are looking for 4-6 people so that the responsibility of teaching can be shared week-to-week. Looking ahead, the age gap of our current students also means that next year we will need to have two separate classes.
We have scheduled a listening session with the SCS families for Sunday, September 22, at 9:00 am in the Faith and Family Center so that concerns can be addressed and a potential way forward discovered.   This is a situation that affects every member of Saint Andrew’s. Beyond the surface issue of not having teachers is the greater concern of not having educational opportunities for the children of our congregation. Without these, we will potentially lose our current families to other congregations, and we will be unable to attract new ones. This will have a dramatic impact on congregational identity and the ministry we do. Please prayerfully consider serving our families in this way.

Changes in Communications!

We have been hard at work in the church office streamlining processes. More details will be available in the upcoming issue of The Voice, but here is a quick summary:

·        The October issue of The Voice will be the final issue of our monthly newsletter.

·        Trendings will still be sent out weekly via email, and there will be printed copies available at the church. It will include information for events 2-3 weeks in advance.

·        Trendings and the website will be your primary sources for information about events and activities at salc.

·        Effective Tuesday, October 1st, the deadline for information to be included in Trendings and the Sunday worship bulletin will be Tuesdays at 12noon.

Please contact Kathy Fisher (kathy@salc.church) or Pastor Lara (pastor@salc.church) if you have any questions about this.

Discipleship Hour Forum ~ A Study Of Dementia
Sundays, September 29 and October 6, 9:00 am, Fellowship Hall North
What Causes Dementia?
Congregation Council member David Vossler, a renown neurology doctor, will walk us through what causes dementia at this two-week Forum. Dr. Vossler will explain the four main types of dementia: Alzheimer disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. During these adult forums, he will explain the causes of these conditions as well as the clinical signs and symptoms that they produce. The sessions include explanations of tests for the diseases and the standard medications being used to help patients.
Dr. Vossler is a Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He recently semi-retired, but is still involved in managing an epilepsy center, teaching physicians, publishing original research study reports and book chapters in the medical literature, and consulting with pharmaceutical companies to develop new and novel treatments for epilepsy/seizures.

NW Washington Synod LiVE Project
LiVE (rhymes with "give") is a ministry of the Northwest Washington Synod. LiVE offers education opportunities for lay people that are more in-depth than we as an individual congregation can offer, with the goal of forming Christian leaders able to make sense of our place in God's world. Saint Andrew’s has purchased a congregation “bundle”, meaning that anyone from the congregation can attend any LiVE offering for no cost. A “promo code” is needed when registering; contact the church office, info@salc.church or 425-746-2529, to get the code. Then, when registering for any LiVE retreat or course, enter the promo code on the registration page and the total cost will become $0.
To learn more about LiVE and the course offerings (the first one begins in September), visit https://lutheransnw.org/ministries/the-live-project.

Food Collection for Hopelink
The Hopelink Food Bank tries hard to provide the items needed and desired by the 1700 households they support. As we partner with them, they have come to ask us for items that are not typically donated. The families they support would like to be able to do some baking, so for September we are collecting “Baking Makings” –sugar, flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, chocolate chips, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and yeast. Hopelink also appreciates the paper bags we supply to them. Bring all donations to the Corner of Blessing in the Narthex.

Volunteers for Youth and Family Activities
We need volunteers for youth events! Sign up in the Narthex to help with an event/activity in September/October. Or, contact Doug Johnson, doug@salc.church, or the Discipleship Ministries Committee to ask about ways you can help!
